On My Easel by Artist Dan Roberge

Here are a few photos of the progression from my initial sketch on the canvas board to my finished oil painting. I started by taking photos of my subject from a perspective I thought would be different. Then I gessoed an art canvas board three times and sanded lightly between each coat after letting the gesso dry for 4-6 hours.

Stage 1: Sketch on canvas.

Stage 2: Block in with palette colors for ball, shirt and background.

Stage 3: Start adding skin and hair colors on this layer. I have to admit that I was unhappy with skin tones after this stage so I repainted the face again with less pinks and I worked to model the facial details more.

Stage 4: Detail close-up.

Final: the big jump with all the details of the face, arm, hair, ball and embroidery.
